A laptop cart is available for use in First-year Writing classes scheduled on Pray Harrold's fourth floor.

The laptop cart is stored in PH423, a closet adjacent to the First-year Writing Center (cluster of classrooms). The cart contains 25 Macbook Airs. The laptops are configured to prompt users to logon to the EMU Wireless system as soon as the system is turned on. Below you will find a complete list of software installed on the laptops. Note that the laptops are running Deep Freeze, which prohibits long-term local file storage. As such, users of the laptops are strongly encouraged to save their work to a USB drive or cloud-based alternative (e.g., Dropbox). Unsaved work is not stored on the laptop between work sessions.

How do I reserve the cart?
Cart reservations may be made by anyone actively teaching in the First-year Writing Program. Reserve the cart online at https://emufywp.youcanbook.me/. Reservations must be made at least one full week in advance of the class in which you plan to use the cart. You may schedule up to two reservations per class at any time (i.e., to ensure the cart's maximum availability across the program, scheduling is both rationed and staggered). Reservations are processed on a first come, first served basis.

Are there time constraints on the cart's availability?
Yes. Due to the department office's hours of operation, the cart is not for any sections schedule at or after 5 p.m. Sections beginning at the following times may reserve and make full use of the cart: 8, 9:30, 11, 12:30, 2, and 3:30 p.m. If you teach an 8 a.m. section and have reserved the cart, you should plan to begin your class with a focused activity, then go to the department office to retrieve the key between 8 and 8:05 a.m.

If I teach an evening class, how can I gain access to a computer lab?
Evening sections have limited access to College of Arts and Sciences computer labs or labs in Halle Library. To inquire about reserving a CAS computer lab for your class, ask Cindy Young or Shayna White in the English Department office. For Halle Library inquiries, visit http://www.emich.edu/library/services/roomreservations.php. We recommend planning ahead by at least one week when making such inquiries.

How can I find out who has the cart reserved already?
The laptop cart schedule is available for review online at http://fywp.emuenglish.org/?page_id=152.

What if I teach at 8 a.m. or at or after 5 p.m.? What are the alternatives for access?
Periodic lab reservations are available depending on the day and time requested. To inquire about lab availability, contact Cindy Young in the English Department office. Please limit your request to no more than two class sessions and make all reservation requests a full week in advance of the class sessions in question.

How does cart check-in and check-out work on the day I am scheduled to use it?
Go to the English Department office (PH612M) and ask for the lanyard with the key to the cart storage closet. You will hold onto the key for the duration of the class session for which you are using the cart. Open PH423. Unplug the cart. Wheel the cart to your classroom. Important: Do not leave the cart unattended as you are responsible for it for the entire time you have it checked out. Keep the cart plugged in while it is in your classroom. Use a check-out sheet to keep track of which students are using which laptops (i.e., have students write down their names and the number of the laptop). At the end of class, promptly return the laptop cart to PH423. Plug in the cart to ensure it is fully charged for the next instructor. Make sure the closet door is closed and locked. Return the key and lanyard to the English Department office to complete the cart check-in process.

What if I notice a problem with the cart?
Report any problems with the cart to the English Department office and to the Director or Associate Director of the First-year Writing Program.

How can I try out one of the laptops (i.e., get to know better how it works)?
Contact Derek Mueller to arrange a brief introduction to the laptops or stop by the FYWP Director's office during posted office hours to try one for a few minutes.

What software is installed on the computers?
Visible in dock: Firefox, Chrome, Evernote, Textwrangler, MS Office/Word, MS Office/Excel, MS Office/Powerpoint, Cyberduck, Dreamweaver, CMap Tools, Photo Booth, iMovie, iPhoto, Garageband, Preview, System Preferences. Installed, though not visible in dock: Handbrake, Textmate, App Store, Calculator, Calendar, Dictionary, Image Capture, iPhoto, iTunes, Quicktime, TextEdit, Automator, Chess, Contacts, FaceTime, Game Center, Mail, Messages, Notes, Stickies, Time Machine.
History
The Celebration of Student Writing, or CSW, began at Eastern Michigan University in 2001. Founded by former co-directors of the First Year Writing program, Linda Adler-Kassner and Heidi Estrem, the CSW was created to be a space that makes visible the writing projects that students develop in WRTG121: Researching the Public Experience
. Tied closely to the Learning Process Outcomes, the CSW exists to provide a public audience for students while positioning them as contributing members of the academic community, with an emphasis on interaction and conversation rather than simply displaying work. The biannual event is open to the public as well as the university community, and ENGL 120 students are also invited to attend. In April 2013, we celebrated our 12th full year with over 1,000 students showing their work from 42 sections of WRTG121.

Concerned with public perceptions of student writing alongside variances in instructor status and control, as well as students’ own perceptions of college-level research writing, the CSW was built into the ENGL 121 curriculum as a means of publicly honoring and celebrating student writing at the semester’s end
. This focus on public literacy is what shapes the CSW as the culminating event for First Year Writing students, in lieu of a final exam. As Estrem concludes from a long-term case study that followed three students through their senior years of high school and first semesters of college composition, the students she followed were good at “studenting,” or doing what was asked of them by their instructors, but rarely were they given the opportunity to compose meaningful writing for an audience beyond the classroom. The FYW program and CSW work through a series of outcomes and coursework so that “students and instructors alike [can] re-imagine writing as a living, engaged response to the world around them” (“Rethinking Research Writing”).

With an emphasis on engagement with the audience, students presenting their work at the CSW pull from a variety of genres including games, performances, staged scenes, role playing, websites, film, poster boards, brochures, art installations and mixed media pieces, among others, to bring their research to a wider audience. ENGL 120 students in recent years have been asked to document the event through social media, and in March 2013 the editors of EM-Journal published a special issue featuring sound clips, images, video, and text from the Fall 2012 CSW. Additionally, there have been several incarnations of videos that feature live interviews, stills, and coverage of the event that can be found on the First Year Writing program website.

Effective in January 2014, the FYWP maintains five listservs for communication with program instructional staff.

# fywp_grad -AT- list.emich.edu - Graduate assistants who teach in the FYWP
# fywp_ptls -AT- list.emich.edu - Part-time lecturers who teach in the FYWP
# fywp_ftls -AT- list.emich.edu - Full-time lecturers who teach in the FYWP
# fywp_discussion -AT- list.emich.edu - A discussion listserv for the entire program. This listserv is set up for you to post questions or announcements, to discuss issues, to share resources, and so on.

Note that anyone can send messages to any of these lists, but lists 1-3 are moderated, which means that all messages sent to them will be held for approval (approval usually does not take longer than 24 hours). All four lists are updated to include only current/active instructional staff shortly after the end of a semester. For now, fywp_discussion -AT- list.emich.edu is configured to be an open discussion list, meaning that anyone on the list can post immediately, without moderation. Posts sent by anyone who is not on the list (or sent from an email address not affiliated with the list) will be held for moderator approval. Lists 1-3 will are to be used for more formal announcements, usually from program directors. The discussion list is appropriate for posing questions, sharing good news, spreading the word about an upcoming event, and so on.

With the start of the listservs mentioned above, the FYWP's long-standing lists, emu_tas -AT- list.emich.edu and emuts -AT- list.emich.edu have been discontinued.

Last updated in Fall 2013, the FYWP policies on equivalency and substitution standards for AP, International Baccalaureate, and CLEP are posted below. The most recent revision brought the program's equivalency practices more fully in alignment with the September 2013 Council of Writing Program Administrators Statement on Pre-College Credit.

The program equivalencies and substitutions are as follows:

ACT and SAT-based Waivers
Students with an ACT English sub-score of 29 or higher, or an SAT Verbal sub-score of 640 or higher, are waived from the WRTG121 General Education requirement. For the new SAT (2016), Evidence-Based Reading and Writing scores 670 and higher will be waived from WRTG121. Scores at or below 490 will be advised to take WRTG120.

Advanced Placement (AP)
English Language AP - a 3 earns credit for WRTG120

English Language AP - a 4 or higher earns credit for WRTG120 and WRTG121

CLEP
CLEP credit is not available for WRTG121 (effective 2010). We also cannot consider CLEP exams only partially completed prior to 2010.

College Composition Modular [formerly English Composition/Freshman College Composition CLEP, discontinued in 2010] - a 65 or higher earns credit for WRTG120

College Composition [formerly English Composition with essay CLEP, discontinued in 2010] - a 65 or higher earns credit for WRTG120

EMU does not provide a locally controlled writing exam complementary to the College Composition Modular test; however, we maintain that listing the exam equivalency this way will ensure that students who have completed this exam elsewhere will be awarded comparable, fair credit appropriate for the scores shown.

International Baccalaureate (IB) (proposed/updated)
Language (English) A1 HL - a 4 or higher earns credit for WRTG120

Language (English) A1 SL - a 4 or higher earns credit for WRTG120

At this time, we do not recommend a waiver/equivalency for WRTG121 based on IB scores, consistent with the September 2013 CWPA Position Statement on Pre-College Credit for Writing.

Transfer Credit Equivalency
Direct transfer credit equivalencies are determined by the Office of Registration and Records. A complete list of direct transfer credit equivalencies is available online at http://www.emich.edu/admissions/requirements/transfer_credit.php. Non-direct transfer credit equivalency requests must be submitted for portfolio-based substitution.

For more information about portfolio-based substitution and equivalency for WRTG121, visit http://fywp.emuenglish.org/?page_id=27.

FYWP instructors may be interested in adapting instructional games for use in WRTG120 and WRTG121. We are currently exploring a project based on rules, roles, and documentation techniques for 120 that might involve games related to writing. For now, we are collecting a series of links to games that instructors might want to consider as part of this broader conversation about a games-focused project:

Key Principles of the First-Year Writing Program
Five key principles guide instruction in EMU’s First-year Writing Program: rhetoric, process, conventions, multimodality, and reflection. You will hear more about each of these principles throughout the semester, and your instructor will often reiterate these concepts during in-class activities, in writing assignments, and in evaluations of your work. But we consider these principles to be farther reaching than any one class or sequence of classes, even farther reaching than an undergraduate degree program. The five principles will persist long after you graduate and will prove a reliable resource in many communication situations in personal, professional, and civic life. Scholars in writing studies have recently identified principles like these as threshold concepts, or as principles that both anchor a domain of knowledge and that, once learned, cannot be unlearned. In other words, as you gain focal experience with these principles in first-year writing, you are forming foundational habits, practices, and ways of thinking that will transfer to communicating effectively in many other situations.

*Rhetoric: communication practices that are self-aware about making a purposeful impression and effecting change in diverse situations

*Process: the ways in which effective communication builds-up and is developed in time

*Conventions: predictable, loosely rule-governed patterns in communication, which are generally agreed upon within academic communities

*Multimodality: composition that engages with a wide range of materials and is both intensified and complicated by writing in digital environments.

*Reflection: when writers pause, take stock, and look back at what has worked well, what might have been handled differently, and the ways such insights inform future communication.

Because each of these five principles refers to a complex array of issues, brief but adequate definitions are difficult to establish. Nevertheless, we consider the definitions listed above to be useful for beginning the conversation about each principle. As your studies progress, you will begin to notice important additions and qualifications that add depth, subtlety, and texture to these preliminary definitions.

FYWP Two-Course Sequence Outcomes
The five key principles for the First-year Writing Program relate to a specific course outcome in WRTG120 and WRTG121. Each principle provides a broader frame in relation to the specific outcomes created for both WRTG 120 and WRTG121. There is a sequential relationship between the outcomes in the two courses as they are linked by the cohering principle. Outcomes specified for WRTG120 in effect build upon outcomes specified for WRTG121.

WRTG120 Outcomes and Key Concepts
The five course outcomes for WRTG120 indicate the priorities guiding instruction, assignment design, and the general progression of the class. You will be asked to reflect upon the connections you find between the five outcomes, selected projects, and your portfolio. The outcomes focus and organize the class, but there are numerous additional dimensions to the class, including considerations of literacy development, critical reading strategies, genre awareness, and practice with language conventions, including syntax and mechanics. The course outcomes are described below:
*Rhetorical knowledge: You will have practiced using language consciously and identifying rhetorical qualities in composing situations.
*Writing process: You will have engaged in invention, drafting, and rewriting, providing explicit evidence of a writing process.
*Genre conventions: You will have demonstrated awareness of academic writing genre conventions, including mechanics and syntax.
*Multimodal transformation: You will have adapted your writing to distinct rhetorical contexts, drawing attention to the way composition transforms across contexts and forms.
*Reflective practice: You will have applied feedback from instructor, peers, and individual reflection to rethink, resee, and ultimately revise your work.

WRTG121 Outcomes and Key Concepts
Much the same as with WRTG120, the five explicit outcomes for WRTG121 provide a distinct organizing frame for the class. The outcomes will be focal at many moments throughout the semester, especially when you write reflections on the projects you have completed or in your final portfolio. Yet, because we don’t want to overload the outcomes or burden them with naming every minor aspect of the class, we want to openly acknowledge that there is much more to the class than these five outcomes. The content of these classes is writing, but we understand that a foundation for successful writing includes critical reading, rhetorical listening, speaking, multimodal design and representation, and working in digital environments. The course outcomes are described below:
*Rhetorical performance: You will have enacted rhetoric by consciously constructing persuasive texts.
*Research process: You will have practiced different research methods, which includes analyzing and using sources and developing primary research.
*Style conventions: You will have developed awareness of conventions of academic research processes, including documentation systems and their purposes.
*Multimodal design: You will have composed using digital technologies, gaining awareness of the possibilities and constraints of electronic environments.
*Reflective interaction: You will have shared your work with your instructor, peers, and/or the university community and accounted for the impact of such interaction on composition.
A Brief Overview
In the college setting, any academic paper that uses outside sources will require some form of citation. A citation is a reference to another source of information. The two most common citation styles are Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA). These two are the most commonly used formats in the First Year Writing Program at EMU, but other citation styles, such as Chicago and Council of Science Editors (CSE), may be required in other classes. Usually professors will make their preference clear, but if not this Wiki page will provide a brief overview of both citation styles to help you determine which best suits your paper.

First, it’s important to understand why we use citations. They:
* Credit others’ work
* Lend credibility to your work by linking yourself to reputable sources/scholars
* Establish your integrity as a student working in an academic community
* Demonstrate the effort and research you’ve done to craft a paper
* Lead your reader toward several sources that they could, in turn, examine as part of their research process

Using outside resources makes your work more credible. Think of it this way: instead of standing alone defending your work, you have a chorus of voices standing behind you reinforcing your ideas. Anytime you incorporate another’s work, you should include a citation, whether you’re quoting directly or paraphrasing (for an overview on what constitutes direct quotations or paraphrasing, see our Wiki entry entitled “Quotation & Paraphrase”).

General Information
APA
APA style is most commonly associated with the social sciences, such as nursing or psychology, but occasionally it is also used in advertising and public relations, rhetoric, writing studies, composition, and technical communication. APA is concerned with source relevancy, which is why the author’s name and the year of publication are always first on the References page. APA considers publication date important because researchers want to be able to know when a study was published, which factors into the source’s credibility and relevance. This style also uses only last names and initials because in order to reduce any stigma associated with gender.

MLA
MLA documentation, according to the official website, is “widely used in the humanities, especially in writing on language and literature.” At EMU, most introductory writing classes (i.e. WRTG120 and WRTG121) will use this style. It features simple, parenthetical in-text citations that link to a separate Works Cited page. Most typically, an in-text citation includes the source author’s last name and the page number: for example, (Smith 135). MLA focuses on writers and their work, which is why the author’s name and the title of his/her work are always first on the Works Cited page.

In papers that use MLA style, citations appear in two places: in-text as parenthetical documentation and at the end of the essay on the Works Cited page.

These websites allow you to select the citation format you are using and plug in information, and then convert your information into a citation. They are helpful to use if you have never cited anything before as it will acquaint you with format conventions in a paper. However, please beware: these website are almost never 100 percent accurate. As such, you should always check the generated citation against a reliable website (see below).

Written by the American Psychological Association, this book provides the most accurate information on APA style. It is a bit less user-friendly than some other resources, but the most important chapters are six and seven. In chapter six, you will find information about how to cite sources in the text. Chapter seven provides detailed examples of the various ways to cite sources in the reference page.

Book cover for Fall 2016
Derek Muellerhttp://fywp.emuenglish.org/wiki/index.php?title=Equivalency&diff=420Equivalency2016-05-18T15:12:46Z
Derek Mueller:

Last updated in Fall 2013, the FYWP policies on equivalency and substitution standards for AP, International Baccalaureate, and CLEP are posted below. The most recent revision brought the program's equivalency practices more fully in alignment with the September 2013 Council of Writing Program Administrators Statement on Pre-College Credit.

The program equivalencies and substitutions are as follows:

ACT and SAT-based Waivers
Students with an ACT English sub-score of 29 or higher, or an SAT Verbal sub-score of 640 or higher, are waived from the ENGL/WRTG121 General Education requirement. For the new SAT, we are using the recommended break point for college readiness of 480 or higher.

Advanced Placement (AP)
English Language AP - a 3 earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120

English Language AP - a 4 or higher earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120 and ENGL/WRTG121

CLEP
CLEP credit is not available for ENGL/WRTG121 (effective 2010). We also cannot consider CLEP exams only partially completed prior to 2010.

College Composition Modular [formerly English Composition/Freshman College Composition CLEP, discontinued in 2010] - a 65 or higher earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120

College Composition [formerly English Composition with essay CLEP, discontinued in 2010] - a 65 or higher earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120

Language (English) A1 HL - a 4 or higher earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120

Language (English) A1 SL - a 4 or higher earns credit for ENGL/WRTG120

At this time, we do not recommend a waiver/equivalency for ENGL/WRTG121 based on IB scores, consistent with the September 2013 CWPA Position Statement on Pre-College Credit for Writing.

Who can I talk to about whether I should be taking WRTG120 or WRTG121 in my first semester?
:The University Advising Career Development Center (UACDC), located at 200 McKenny Hall, offers general advising for first-year students (and advising for others, as well): http://www.emich.edu/uacdc/students/advising/.

Is the Celebration of Student Writing required? What if I cannot attend due to a schedule conflict?
:Attendance and participation at the Celebration of Student Writing is required. If you cannot attend for reasons of a documented athletic event, a documented work conflict, or a documented class conflict, notify your instructor at least three weeks before the event to make alternative arrangements, which may include an in-class presentation and/or an additional project.

What if I need help with technology?
:Assistance with classroom technology is available from the College of Arts and Sciences IT department located in Pray Harrold 517. For the Classroom Technology Support Hotline, call 734-487-4747. If you do not reach someone at that number, contact Steve Dotson at 734-487-2538 or 734-323-4436. As a third option, contact Aric Kirkland at 734-487-2948 or 734-516-3888.

How do I schedule a class session with a librarian?
:To coordinate a special session with a librarian, visit Halle Library's First-Year Writing Instructor Guide. Related questions should be addressed to Sarah Fabian, First-Year Experience Librarian.

If a student requests it, can I grant an override into my section of WRTG120 or WRTG121?
:Our policy is to decline overrides requests into WRTG120 and WRTG121 because the course caps are set with sensitivity to best practices. When declining requests, we suggest you remind students that they may monitor the enrollment system to watch for a seat opening up before the end of the add/drop period or that they may enroll in WRTG120 or WRTG121 as soon as registration opens for the next semester.

How do I send email to the entire class from Gmail?
:When sending an email from the EMU GMail account, type the five-digit CRN number for your section followed by the term ID: .201510@emich.edu. You will receive a message to confirm that you wish to relay the message to your entire class list.

How do I schedule a class in a computer lab?
:Computer lab access is limited. When possible, consider using the laptop cart. Further inquiries about lab availability should be made in the department office.

What if I need to cancel a class?
:When it is necessary to cancel a class meeting, the first step is to email the listservs to check with FYWP colleagues for possible coverage. If no coverage is available, notify the department office and send an email to your students, cc'ing the director and associate director.

How do incompletes work?
:For information about incompletes, visit the Office of Records and Registration FAQ. Incompletes may be assigned at an instructor's discretion, provided 1) the student has a passing grade of C or better at the time of the request, 2) the missing work can be made up in a reasonable period of time (no more than one calendar year), and 3) the circumstances precipitating the request involve a sudden and unforeseeable situation that the instructor agrees warrants an incomplete. It is each instructor's responsibility to fulfill the terms agreed upon with the student and to carry out the contract to its completion.

Where do I submit final grades?
:The Provost's Office will send a reminder with instructions about posting grades each semester. Final grades are posted in the my.emich.edu system.

Is direct deposit an option for payroll?
:Yes, contact the payroll office to learn more about the direct deposit option. You cannot set up direct deposit until you have a working eID number.

Where can I obtain a faculty ID?
:Visit the Eagle One office in 201 Pierce Hall to obtain your ID card. Note that instructor IDs are provided to faculty right away, although you might need to ask for it to be printed. Other IDs are mailed and will arrive in two weeks via USPS mail.

Where can I get chalk for the chalkboards in PH414-418?
:The chalkboards in PH414-418 require Prang Dustless Chalk (N231144, made in France) and Quartet Custodial Erasers (N6807-628). You can find chalk in 612B in a drawer near the utility sink. No boxes are handed out; please limit yourself to a couple pieces at a time. Ask for chalk in the department office.

What should I do when I encounter plagiarism?
:Because plagiarism is a complicated issue, we want to be cautious about offering simplistic or over-general advice about its handling. In cases of blatant plagiarism appropriate responses usually involve communicating with the student about the specific concerns and assigning a failing grade on an assignment or in the course. At the instructor's discretion, you may submit an Academic Dishonesty referral to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. Citation errors, poor paraphrasing (patchwriting), and mishandled direct quotations, however, may not constitute plagiarism, and we urge great care to teach these distinctions in the context of specific writing assignments where such patterns appear. For additional resources on plagiarism, see the Plagiarism for Educators Research Guide.

What if I have a conflict, concern, or issue concerning student behavior?
:Guidance concerning classroom disruptions are available at http://www.emich.edu/studentconduct/facultylinks.php. For most matters involving conflict, concern, disagreement, or related issues, we generally prefer an approach that begins with open, direct communication. For instance, at times it is helpful to write a concise email that reiterates verbal exchanges or describes a behavior pattern and to cc the director, associate director, and/or department head. If an in-person meeting would be helpful, contact the program director who will assist with coordinating a meeting. If you have concerns about a student's well-being, you are encouraged to submit a Care Report, which will bring any concerns to the attention of a team of qualified professionals who can evaluate the situation and act on the student's behalf.
