You will hear more about each of these principles throughout the semester, and your instructor will often reiterate these concepts during in-class activities, in writing assignments, and in evaluations of your work. But we consider these principles to be farther reaching than any one class or sequence of classes, even farther reaching than an undergraduate degree program. The five principles will persist long after you graduate and will prove a reliable resource in many communication situations in personal, professional, and civic life. Scholars in writing studies have recently identified principles like these as threshold concepts, or as principles that both anchor a domain of knowledge and that, once learned, cannot be unlearned. In other words, as you gain focal experience with these principles in first-year writing, you are forming foundational habits, practices, and ways of thinking that will transfer to communicating effectively in many other situations.</div></td><td class='diff-marker'>+</td><td style="color:black; font-size: 88%; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px 1px 1px 4px; border-radius: 0.33em; border-color: #a3d3ff; vertical-align: top; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div><ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">[[File:FYWP_5.png|150px|thumb|right|The First Year Writing Program's Five Key Principles]]</ins>Five key principles guide instruction in EMU’s First-year Writing Program: rhetoric, process, conventions, multimodality, and reflection.
